This long-anticipated reworking of the City Missions’ humble Hobson Street home stunningly remakes this city block. It is an architecture aiming not just to rebuild vulnerable lives but to compassionately reintegrate city life. Cleverly organised by a pass-through lane at street level, it offers a programmatic diversity whose social vitality and vision is far in excess of that routinely found elsewhere in the inner city. A new nine storey structure utilising innovative CLT construction produces an iconically simple elevational outline, while a weave of criss-cross bracing and balconies complexify the public face of the building. With the restoration of the former Prince of Wales Hotel originally housing the Mission alongside, this HomeGround speaks to an ethos of care and generosity. It is a project built utterly on aroha.
