John Scott Award for Public Architecture

The John Scott Award for Public Architecture honours the memory of John Scott (1924-1992), a New Zealand original.

Ask any New Zealand architect for a list of his or her favourite local buildings and John’s Futuna Chapel in Karori, Wellington, is bound to be at the top. John took elements of New Zealand’s vernacular architectural tradition – both Māori and European – and interpreted, adapted and fused them in his inimitable style in many accomplished and intriguing buildings. Both of this place and completely his own person, John was an architect’s architect, and this named award recognises his unique achievements.
