This bold and confident seaside house, a sculptural work for a sculptor client, contrasts dramatically with its neighbours, and yet is a disciplined response to a modest and restricted site. The house is a cave: the exterior is a concrete extrusion informed by compliance constraints; the interior is an intimate and atmospheric home. The excellent detailing of materials selected from a limited palette reveals the architects’ mastery of current timber and concrete technologies.
